HC4SPORTS – Towards data-based influencing
HC4SPORTS is a data-based leadership platform developed for the needs of sports organizations. Through our assessment format & relational technology, the data collected from the sports organization’s activities is transformed into understandable, measurable, and comparable format. The structure of the evaluation package incudes goal profiles and impact indices. The evaluation metrics have been tested through action research coordinated by the University of Turku and funded by the Ministry of Education and Culture. The platform is available through a three-year license. We also offer a coaching program (see HC Academy) that trains the organization to build its community-driven leadership on its own authentic data.
Sports clubs fill an important role in society. Clubs organize multiple generations together in pursuit of common goals, foster a sense of community among their members, contribute to public health, pave the way for careers in coaching and sports, and influence the regional and national economy through sporting events. The platform aims to help the sport clubs to better understand their community and evaluate the community’s impact. The platform offers versatile tools for assessing and improving the quality of sports leadership. The goal is to create organizations that support the well-being and development of their members, whether they are coaches, players, staff, or community builders. These tools enable tracking how the resources invested in sports activities translate into societal benefits. Not only local clubs and national federations, but but also partners and policymakers at all scales, can benefit from the HC4SPORTS platform.
Structure of the Evaluation Package
1. Goal profiles
HC4SPORTS gathers the strongest and most critical goals of the assessed group. The most critical goals are formed by current and target state comparisons. Goal profiles are created with equal input from all roles. The test has been developed by experts specifically for sports-club settings.

Design is registered to HedCo ltd by European Union Intellectual Property Office (EUIPO) 29/9/2022.

2. The main indices
Board and Executives

CHANGE READINESS INDEX
How large are the current-target state gaps, and what are the areas of development in the club?
Board and Executives

Resilience INDEX
What kind of learning environment can the sports club provide for the next generation to acquire relevant skills and understanding for tomorrow?
Club Management

SENSE OF COMMUNITY INDEX
How participative, goal-oriented, critical and unanimous are the people in our club?
Sport Managers

PLAYER DEVELOPMENT INDEX
Does our club offer chances to pursue an international career regardless of gender, age, or ethnicity?
Sport Managers

REFLECTIVITY INDEX
How well does our club culture foster reflectivity of coaches and athletes? Are the athletic goals in concordance with coaching goals?
EXAMPLE: FOUR-FIELD RESILIENCE INDEX
The Resilience Index consists of Human resources and Sense of community, which are all formed by relative Machine Learning algorithms. The algorithm compares all units in the dataset, making the result a relative score.
Clubs and teams naturally have different goals, and therefore interpretation of the indices should be done in relation to the intended outcomes. Low-threshold sports teams and highly competitive teams have trade-offs in achieving resilient structures. We believe that when social impact and sporting success remain resilient, at a reasonable level of human and financial burden or sacrifice, the club is practicing community-driven leadership. HC4SPORTS recognizes the most resilient units to balance their Human resources with their Sense of Community. In this case, operations are based mainly on the club’s
community expertise, and costs are on a humanly and economically resilient basis.

Towards community-driven leadership with data
Clubs and associations often have a long history and they have developed their own identity and ways of operating. There is no one-size-fits-all model for leadership. Community-driven leadership does not arise from instructions – but from leadership that enables action. This is what we call community-driven leadership.

We believe strategic self-assessment of an organization enables it to articulate its own direction, makes the community relationships visible and identifies structural capacity. HC4SPORTS gathers data from club members, coaches, management in the form of self-assessment tests. HC4SPORTS aims to identify the unique strengths of each organization and utilize them as a foundation for growth.
We work closely with the Union for European Sport Clubs (UESC) which coordinates the data. The UESC was founded by members of the Sports Club 2.0 platform, a sister project of HC4SPORTS. HedCoach supports organizations during the learning phase of data-based methods, but the long-term goal is to create communities capable of independent advancement. Therefore, data ownership always remains with the organization. At its best, a sport club is an environment that fosters leadership and innovations that benefit the society as a whole.
Open data benefits the international community
While sports results are publicly available information, the data displayed by the HC4SPORTS platform is also open. This allows clubs and organizations to compare their results on a broader scale and gain a better understanding of their own performance. At the same time, best practices spread more effectively throughout the entire community. Open data increases fundamental research into sports club activities. International research collaboration with the University of Turku and East Carolina University has strengthened the scientific and societal impact of HC4SPORTS assessment. Scientific evaluation is not an end in itself, but a way to test the reliability of our approach and methods.
We will challenge you but not excessively
Short on time? Our Data Inventory service and Interim Community Leader to initiate and implement the process, so you can move forward with confidence. Reach out below to learn more about the service and pricing.
DATA INVENTORY: A data inventory is the starting point for strategic assessment. Basic information about the club community, its units (teams/groups), and club members is collected and approved for assessment purposes.
INTERIM COMMUNITY LEADER: The community leader enables community-driven leadership, i.e., a role that creates a strong culture of shared responsibility and capability within the community. The role is not an administrative addition, but is located at the interface between the organization and the community. The resourcing and implementation of the service are agreed between DBI Solutions Oy and the club. Interim is a risk-free and flexible option because it is purchased from DBI Solutions Oy.
Learning by investing – everybody moves at their own rhythm

The HedCoach Learning Curve is based on pragmatistic thinking and views about learning taking
place predominantly in interaction and always serving first and foremost the actor’s perspective. Thus we provide the learner a holistic experience in monitoring how the new ways to think, talk and act are transmitted through key interactions, thus gradually changing the very environment affecting the actor. The reward for the learner is witnessing the influence from authentic data that cannot be ’made up’.
